Early Orthodontics

When Should a Child First Visit the Orthodontist?

While the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children have their first orthodontic visit by age 7, we will often treat before this age.  Our orthodontic team treats patients with the airway in mind, as young as age 3.  We work very closely with the top oral and maxillofacial surgeons, ENT’s, pediatric sleep specialists, and pediatricians in the region that are also aware of the connections between orthodontics and airway, sleeping, and breathing.  If your child is experiencing symptoms like snoring, clenching/grinding, mouth breathing, bed wetting, daytime sleepiness among many others, orthodontics could certainly help!  This early evaluation allows Dr. Jacob Zitterkopf to assess whether orthodontic treatment may be needed and to determine the ideal timing for it. Many local dentists are trained to spot early orthodontic issues and may refer you to our office even before age 7.

Why Evaluate Children at Such a Young Age?

Early diagnosis and treatment can help guide emerging teeth into better positions, preserve space for permanent teeth, enhance craniofacial growth, and reduce the risk of damage to protruding front teeth.

If early treatment is necessary, Dr. Jacob Zitterkopf can guide jaw growth and the alignment of incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also help regulate the width of the dental arches, create space for permanent teeth, minimize the need for extractions, reduce the chance of impacted teeth, correct thumb-sucking habits, and address abnormal swallowing or speech issues. In short, early treatment can simplify future orthodontic care once all permanent teeth have erupted.

Does Early Treatment Benefit Every Child?

Not all children benefit from early orthodontic treatment. Some issues are better addressed during the teenage years when all permanent teeth have emerged. Certain skeletal problems may also be more effectively treated once growth is further along or completed. Dr. Zitterkopf will develop a personalized treatment plan based on your child’s specific needs. If early treatment isn’t needed, your child will be enrolled in our Orthodontic Observation Program.

What is the Orthodontic Observation Program?

The Orthodontic Observation Program (OBS program) is for children who aren’t yet ready for treatment. This program allows us to monitor the eruption of permanent teeth. Sometimes, early removal of baby teeth can improve the alignment of permanent teeth and reduce the overall time needed for braces. We’ll keep your general or pediatric dentist informed of any recommendations from your visits. Typically, we see patients every 6-12 months to track their progress as they grow. This program is free of charge and helps us determine the best time to start treatment for optimal results.

What Are the Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment Beyond a Beautiful Smile?

Orthodontic treatment not only improves the appearance of your child’s smile but also enhances bite function, makes teeth easier to clean, prevents excessive wear on teeth, and increases the longevity of natural teeth throughout their lifetime.

Will Early Treatment Prevent the Need for Braces During Adolescence?

Early treatment can address significant issues, prevent more severe problems from developing, and simplify future orthodontic care. However, since not all permanent teeth have erupted during early treatment, final alignment may not be fully achieved. A shorter comprehensive treatment phase (Phase II – full braces) during the teen years, after all permanent teeth have come in, is typically needed to complete the correction. In rare cases, no further orthodontic treatment may be necessary after Phase I.

Do We Still Need to See Our Family Dentist During Orthodontic Treatment?

Yes, it’s important to continue regular check-ups and cleanings with your family or pediatric dentist every six months during orthodontic treatment. Patients with braces and other orthodontic appliances need to put extra effort into maintaining oral hygiene, and regular dental visits are crucial for ensuring the health of teeth and gums throughout the treatment process.

The AAO and Dr. Jacob Zitterkopf recommend that every child has an orthodontic screening at the latest by age 7.
