Occasionally, some patients will experience an injury to the mouth during treatment. Dental emergencies while wearing braces or other orthodontic appliances generally fall into two categories.
Sometimes, orthodontic appliances may break or bend during treatment. If you experience any issues, such as loose bands, brackets, broken wires, or wires poking, please contact our office to schedule an appointment during regular patient hours. To ensure the best care for all our patients, we do not handle emergencies on a walk-in basis. However, here are some tips to manage common issues until you can visit our office:
Irritating Tie Wire: If a tie wire is causing irritation, cover it with beeswax or gently tuck it under the archwire using a blunt object like a pencil eraser or a Q-tip.
Loose Band or Bracket: A loose band or bracket can usually stay in place until your appointment. Call Falcon Orthodontics during patient hours to schedule a visit for reattaching the loose appliance, if necessary.
Broken or Poking Archwire: If an archwire is broken or poking, try bending it back into place with a pencil eraser or trimming it with clean nail clippers. If the issue persists, contact our office during patient hours for further assistance.
If you experience a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, whether or not you are currently undergoing orthodontic treatment, ice the injured area immediately and contact your regular dentist as soon as possible. An x-ray may be needed to assess the extent of the injury. If a tooth has been displaced, knocked out, or fractured, it’s best to reach out to your family dentist first, as they are more likely to have the necessary materials and anesthesia to treat such injuries. If your orthodontic appliances are affected, we will adjust or replace them after you have seen your general dentist, depending on your comfort level.
If an orthodontic emergency arises outside of regular office hours and the patient is in pain, please contact our office for after-hours assistance. We will provide information on who to contact for further help.
