While the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children have their first orthodontic visit by age 7, we will often treat before this age. Our orthodontic team treats patients with the airway in mind, often as young as age 3. We work very closely with the top oral and maxillofacial surgeons, ENT’s, pediatric sleep specialists, and pediatricians in the region that are also aware of the connections between orthodontics and airway, sleeping, and breathing. If your child is experiencing symptoms like snoring, clenching/grinding, mouth breathing, bed wetting, daytime sleepiness among many others, orthodontics could certainly help!
Early evaluation helps us observe and inform rather than immediately start treatment. It allows us to identify potential future needs and discuss them. While only a small percentage may require early intervention, we assess habits, medical issues, and set up an observation schedule until the child is ready for treatment.
The initial visit usually lasts between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the patient’s readiness for treatment. We may conduct a visual exam or take complete diagnostic records, including photos, x-rays, and digital scans, to assess the current position of the teeth and jaw growth.
