Aligners vs. Braces: Which Is Right for Your Lifestyle and Bite?

Aligners or Braces? How to Decide | Falcon Orthodontist

Aligners and traditional braces both move teeth effectively — which one is right for you usually comes down to your specific bite, your daily habits, and your goals, not a blanket claim that one is universally better.

Braces tend to make more sense when:

  • The case involves complex movements — significant rotations, vertical repositioning, or major bite correction — that benefit from a fixed appliance’s constant, controlled force
  • Compliance is a real concern, since braces work regardless of whether a patient remembers to wear anything, which matters especially with younger patients
  • Treatment needs to coordinate with expansion appliances or other fixed hardware

Aligners tend to make more sense when:

  • The case is primarily crowding, spacing, or a mild-to-moderate bite issue
  • The patient is disciplined about wearing trays 20 to 22 hours a day, since aligners only work while they’re actually in
  • Removability matters for work, sports, instruments, or personal preference
  • Easier hygiene during treatment is a priority, since trays come out for brushing and flossing

Where it gets more nuanced: some cases marketed online as “aligner-friendly” are genuinely too complex for trays alone and end up needing braces, or a combined approach — braces for part of treatment, aligners to finish. It’s part of why mail-order aligner services without real in-person orthodontic oversight can produce disappointing, or even harmful, results for bites they weren’t built to handle.

At our Falcon office, Dr. Zitterkopf uses digital 3D scanning to map your specific bite and lays out the options that will genuinely work for your case — not just the one that’s easiest to sell. Sometimes that’s aligners, sometimes braces, sometimes both at different stages.

If you’re weighing aligners against braces, the honest starting point is an actual exam of your bite, not a general preference. Schedule a consultation and we’ll map out what’s realistic for you.
