• Desensitization visits, where a child comes in just to see the office, sit in the chair, and get comfortable before any treatment is attempted
• A range of sedation options, from nitrous oxide through general anesthesia, chosen individually rather than by a one-size-fits-all protocol
• Coordination with medical specialists, since many syndromic conditions — Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum conditions, craniofacial syndromes, and others — carry specific dental considerations: differences in tooth development, oral motor function, medication interactions, or airway anatomy that need to shape the treatment plan

Why this matters specifically for oral health: children with special needs often face higher rates of dental disease, sometimes due to feeding difficulties, medication side effects like dry mouth, or challenges with independent brushing. At the same time, they’re sometimes least likely to get consistent preventive care, because families have had difficult past experiences at practices not equipped for their needs.
