Those chalky white patches that sometimes appear on teeth, often near the gumline or right after braces come off, aren’t cavities yet — but they are a real issue: early enamel demineralization. Left alone, they can progress into cavities, or simply remain as a permanent cosmetic mark even after hygiene improves. In many cases, they can now be treated without a drill or a single shot.

What causes white spot demineralization:

• Plaque accumulation around brackets, especially near the gumline where brushing is hardest during orthodontic treatment
• High acid or sugar exposure, including frequent soda, juice, or sports drink consumption
• Fluorosis, from excess fluoride exposure during tooth development — a different cause, similar appearance
• Developmental enamel defects unrelated to hygiene entirely

Historically, white spots that didn’t resolve with fluoride and better hygiene left limited options: whitening (which often exaggerates the contrast between the spot and surrounding enamel rather than blending it), veneers, or simply living with them.

ICON resin infiltration changes that equation. It works by infiltrating a specialized low-viscosity resin directly into the porous, demineralized enamel responsible for the white, chalky look. The resin fills the microscopic pores that scatter light differently than healthy enamel — the actual reason the spot appears white — and once cured, the treated enamel reflects light much closer to the surrounding healthy tooth. The spot visually blends in, often dramatically, in a single office visit.

What makes it appealing: no drilling, no anesthesia, and no removal of healthy tooth structure — ICON treats the existing enamel rather than replacing it.
