Adult Sleep Apnea and Your Bite: Can Orthodontics Actually Help You Sleep Better?

Can Orthodontics Help With Adult Sleep Apnea? | Falcon

Adults diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea usually assume treatment starts and ends with CPAP or an oral appliance. Jaw structure rarely enters that conversation, but for a real subset of patients, it’s directly relevant. A narrow upper jaw, or a lower jaw set back behind the upper one, reduces the space available for the tongue, which can push it further toward the throat during sleep and worsen airway collapse.

We won’t overstate this: orthodontics isn’t a stand-alone cure for sleep apnea. What it can be is a genuinely useful piece of a larger plan when structure is part of the underlying cause.

Where orthodontic treatment can fit in:

  • MARPE (Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion): widens a narrow adult upper jaw using anchor screws rather than depending on a fused suture to respond on its own, which can increase nasal airway volume and ease nasal breathing.
  • Bite alignment supporting oral appliance therapy: a properly aligned bite often improves the fit and function of a sleep physician’s oral appliance.
  • Early correction in growing patients: addressing a recessed lower jaw in childhood, when possible, to help prevent the airway crowding that can contribute to apnea decades later.

Coordination is the operative word. We don’t diagnose or manage sleep apnea at our Falcon office — that’s the role of a sleep physician and a formal sleep study. What Dr. Zitterkopf does is evaluate whether jaw structure is contributing, and when it is, works directly with your sleep physician and ENT so the orthodontic plan supports the medical one.

If you’ve been told you have a narrow palate or a recessed jaw and you’re already managing sleep apnea, bring your sleep study to our Falcon office. We’ll give you a straightforward assessment of whether orthodontics is likely to help.
