Orthodontist + Sleep Medicine Doctor: How Co-Managed Care Gets Better Results

Orthodontist & Sleep Medicine Co-Management | Falcon

Sleep-disordered breathing crosses specialty lines, and no single provider covers the entire condition. A sleep medicine physician diagnoses and manages sleep apnea through sleep studies and treatments like CPAP or oral appliances. An orthodontist evaluates and treats the jaw and palate structure that can contribute to airway restriction. Addressing only one side of that equation tends to produce incomplete results.

What co-managed care generally involves:

On the sleep medicine side:

  • Diagnosing sleep apnea through in-lab or home sleep study
  • Determining severity and appropriate first-line treatment
  • Tracking outcomes with follow-up testing over time

On the orthodontic side:

  • Assessing whether jaw or palate structure contributes to airway restriction
  • Providing expansion — MARPE/MSE for adults, traditional expansion for growing children — where structurally indicated
  • Aligning the bite to support the fit and function of a prescribed oral appliance

When these providers communicate directly, sharing imaging and treatment timelines, patients avoid a common pitfall: finishing orthodontic treatment that doesn’t meaningfully change sleep apnea severity, or pursuing sleep apnea treatment while a structural cause keeps working against it unaddressed.

At our Falcon office, Dr. Zitterkopf maintains referral relationships with sleep medicine physicians across the region so information moves in both directions. If jaw or palate patterns consistent with sleep-disordered breathing show up during an exam, we refer out for a formal sleep evaluation rather than assuming. And when a sleep physician’s patient has a narrow palate or a bite compromising an oral appliance’s fit, we’re glad to join that care team.

If you’re already under a sleep physician’s care and suspect jaw structure might be part of your picture, bring your sleep study to our Falcon office. We’ll review it together and tell you honestly where orthodontics fits, if it fits at all.
